The Motherboard
A motherboard is the central circuit board of a computer, all the components of a computer are plugged into the motherboard and it provides power and data transfer between the components of a computer.
The main parts of a motherboard are:
.The IDE connections; used to plug in hard drives and CD/DVD drives
.The AGP graphics card slot
.A CMOS battery; for the internal clock
.The processor connection
.A PCI connection for the network card
.An ISA connection for the sound card
.A power connection which plugs into the mains
The motherboard also contains the BIOS.
The BIOS or the Basic Input Output System makes all the different componants work together as a computer.
The BIOS is the first software which is run when a computer is powered.
The purpose of the BIOS is to load an operating system from a mass storage device e.g. a hard drive, and initialise and test hardware components
